It’s the first full day of spring but winter’s snow remains. Here are a few photos from today’s walk near Duke Island Park and the Raritan River in New Jersey.frozen canal

Aftermath of Hurricane Irene

Flooding occurred in communities along the Raritan and Millstone Rivers.

Rainbow after Hurricane Irene before the flood waters rose.

Hurricane Irene caused major flooding and damage this weekend over a widespread area of the eastern United States, including communities along the Raritan and Millstone Rivers in central New Jersey. The hurricane dumped nearly 7.5 inches of rain into the already sated ground and waterways. Many people are still without electricity, although our power was restored late yesterday afternoon. We were fortunate to have had only a little water in our basement; there are many homes where water filled basements and rose above the height of the kitchen countertops on the first floor. Several homes had foundations destroyed from the currents. Sunny weather these past few days has helped to dry things out, aiding the progress of the massive cleanup.
